SUE MIFSUD

'Sue started working with clay in 1993 and feels it is a shot in the arm from the normality of everyday life, it’s also an infinitely diverse medium with which she can express herself. She feels that freedom is lost to routine and tries to avoid that predictability in my ceramic work.  The concepts she plays with demand that she uses varying ceramic techniques to display the thoughts that collect in her head,  her most content moments being the ones spent in the studio untangling her mind. 

Sue is currently in her final year of study at Glasgow School of Art for her BA (Hons) Degree in Ceramic Design and although originally established as a potter, through the influence of her studies many other making methods have now become dominant in her work.  She continues to research and develop the use of clay, glazes and firing techniques.'

MARIO AGIUS (b.1956)

MARIO AGIUS

Mario Agius (l956- ) has nourished a love for sculpture and design from his early youth. His humble, kind and gentle nature impinges itself on his concepts, vision and artistic expression. Talent and his enthusiasm for sculpture helped him in no small way during his studies under the late Monsignor Michelangelo Apap (1915-2006) in drawing and painting and in carving wood under the able direction of Anton Agius (1933-2008) one of our leading carvers in wood after the exceptional Samuel Bugeja (1920-2004), his relative. For several decades Mario Agius has been commissioned numerous works in churches especially and particularly in the sphere of decorative sculpture in wood and ecclesiastical furniture. In 1989 he attended a course in sculptural studies at the White Knight Gallery in Cheltenham, U.K. organized by Ian Norbury, a sculptor of intemational repute. Presently Mario Agius teaches technology and design in wood at Ninu Cremona Lyceum Complex in Victoria, Gozo. The artist has participated in various collective exhibitions including those organized by Members of the British Woodcan/ers Association. A number of his works have been acquired by art lovers and are found in private collections both locally and outside our shores that include countries like England and Switzerland. His finest works in carved wood adorn our churches in towns and villages. Mario Agius is an expert craftsman and professional artist who has exploited surface globigerina with a hard patina, creatively using vermiculated eroded surfaces for effect in contrast to silken polished parts

 Doranne Alden

Doranne Alden is a professional graphic designer and artist. As an artist, her preferred painting medium is watercolour based media. Doranne was born in Sliema in 1963, and after completing her education, studied art for a number of years at the School of Art in Malta under the guidance of Joseph L. Mallia (1937- ). She also followed other Design related courses, including Interior Design, but chose to work as a Graphic Designer and Artist.

Contemporaneously she frequented a painting group led by Joy Micallef Farndell(1924-), an exceptional watercolourist. In Malta she worked as a graphic designer for over fifteen years with several major advertising agencies and eventually as a freelance designer. Over the years she gleaned experience in several aspects of design, but it was during the years as a freelance designer that Doranne produced a series of original postcards: ‘Details of Malta’, posters: ‘Glimpses of Malta’ and personalised photographic calendars. Inevitably this led her to launch her own advertising agency: ‘Details Design Ltd’, along with a partner up to 1995.

In 1996 she settled in Germany with her family until 2003. While living there she held drawing and watercolour classes for adults. She also became an active member of an art group of abstract art organised by German artist Frau Renate Botzenhardt. She lived in Bavaria, she participated in joint and collective exhibitions. Her three major exhibitions were two solos: the first at the Gasthaus Zur Post in Wessoburn, Germany, while the second solo was held at the Art Hotel in Vienna, Austria and: a joint exhibition held at the Town Hall in Tutzing, Bavaria.

In 2006 Doranne won first prize in the watercolour section in the Silver Palette Competition organised biannually by the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. Her third solo was held in December 2008, at a VR-Bank near Passau and and most recent solo was in 2009 at the premises of German Maltese Circle in Valletta, Malta.
Her work has been referred to as ‘little jewels of art’ in the ‘Ammersee Kurier’; as ‘natural without being too realistic’ a phrase by Thomas Wellens in the ‘Weilheim Tablett’; Marika Azzopardi coined the epithet ‘warmth and mouth-watering mellowness’ for her fruit (pears) in the ‘Weekender’ the culture section of ‘The Times’ a local paper. Alden’s paintings form part of several private collections in Malta and overseas. One such work holds pride of place in the foyer of the Munich International School, Percha Bavaria.

Doranne Alden is the daughter of well known Maltese watercolourist Albert Caruana and is married to Simon Alden (vice president of the German-Maltese Circle).

MARTHESE VELLA (b.1960)

Marthese Vella started tuition at the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce under the tutorship of Anthony Degiovanni and after at the Malta School of Art under Joseph Lawrence Mallia, Harry Alden, Charles Cassar, Joseph Casha, Ray Pitre` and Eman Grima. She also followed a programme of studies under the guidance of Artist Anthony Calleja.

Exhibited in various collective exhibitions such as the International Biennale in Poland, “Eight Women in Gozo” and “Eight Women in Historical Towns”. Was awarded an Honourable Mention in the Silver Palette Competition in 2002 and is included in “The International Dictionary of Artists who Painted Malta” by Nicholas de Piro.

Marthese loves shade, brightness and colour that instinctively inspire her to capture moments through her art. Her favourite mediums are Acrylics and Water Colours.
