PREVIEW - 2013

2013 - PREVIEW

During 2013, it is my intention to dedicate my blog 'focusonmalteseart' to lady artists, At present there is a great movement in Malta of art related circles and activities with a large number of female artists and photographers presenting serious works of art, painting, photography and crafts which in my opinion should be viewed, admired, and appreciated.

VINCE CARUANA - Open Studio 8-9 December 2012

VINCE CARUANA - born and raised in the Maltese Islands, small but yet rich in its 7000 years of intriguing history gave Vince Caruana an appreciation for an eclectic culture from an early age. His artistic works reflects a marriage of characteristics, styles and aesthetics of the islands’ identity – the megalithic temples, the narrow meandering streets of the towns, the Renaissance cathedrals, the Baroque churches – with a contemporary sensuality.
Caruana studied art at the Malta Schools of Art, Scranton College of Arts Pennsylvania and earned a Masters in Visual Arts from the Libera Accademia di Belle Arti of Florence. He has mounted several solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous collectives both locally and abroad. Some major international collectives include Madiera International Arte Bienal (Portugal), Museo Casa da Luz (Portugal), Tempra Accademy (Connecticut, USA), Akademie Klausenhof of Hamminken (Germany), Culturel Christiane Peugeot (Paris), Galerie Adam & Eve (Paris), Loggia del Grano and the Quarter both in Florence. He has been the artist-in-residence of some major 5 star resorts on the island including Mgarr Hotel, Grand Hotel and the Kempinski San Lawrenz Resort. Currently he is the artist in residence of Maji Wine & Dine.
His winning-paintings have earned him distinctive awards namely the Malta Biennal: Tribute to CHOGM, Malta, a Special Distinction Award: Connecticut, USA, the President’s Special Award: Madiera International Arte Bienal, Portugal and the Palma D’Oro Award: Italy. Additionally, Caruana has realized some distinctive artworks comprising the Grand Hotel conference hall 6’’ x 12’’ mural, the GCAC conference hall mural 4’’ x 6’’ mural, the Ghajnsielem Civic Centre conference hall 4’’ x 11’’ mural, a set of paintings for the archives of St. Jospeh Band Club, a memento to the ex-President of Malta Dr. Edward Fenech Adami, and a memento to Alejandro Amenabar (Madrid), the director of several films.
Caruana has been recognized as the first artist to introduce lenticular artworks to the Maltese Islands with his exhibits being mounted at the Natural Museum of History at Mdina. Last year the artist carved his name in the history of church bells in Malta. He was in charge of the frontal bronze reliefs and accompanying wreaths of eight bells for the Ghajnsielem Sanctuary. This four-year long €600,000 project was founded in Cornille Havard bronze foundry, France

PAUL HABER (b.19 ) A TRIBUTE

PRESIDENT OF MALTA

Paul Haber, is a seasoned and international known and respected sculptor and ceramist. A humble man of a few words on whose friendship you can really count. On more than one occasion I sought his help and advice and he was always there to listen and help. I remember very well the great respect and admiration Chev. Vincent Apap had of Paul and he always spoke highly of him.
Behind this quiet person there is however another person who emerges only when he has the clay in his hand, this person is of great dynamics and he moulds the clay in quick steps according to his wishes. After this process there is an even more important one the one of fire and colour, this is unique to Paul and this is were his greatness comes out, in the finished item, a joy for ever.

JAMES VELLA CLARK - 'DEAD PALM TREE'

JAMES VELLA CLARK AND ALFRED CHRICOP

"Dead Palm Tree” was the theme of my latest exhibition featuring a collection of 15 recent works, mainly landscapes shown at Lily Agius Gallery in Sliema. The exhibition was open to the public between the 3rd and the 24th November.
The exhibition was kindly supported by FFF Legal, Bank of Valletta, The Malta Independent and Marques de Casa Concha wines.
An unusual recurrent use of green tones dominates the bigger part of this collection. The composition in most paintings is still structured however, the overall style remains somewhat abstracted and highly spontaneous. It is a style that can be easily defined as ‘structured abstraction’ conveying the message that whilst the artist wants to remain in control, there is a lot of ‘letting go’. Surrendering to the flow whilst wanting to remain in control creates an unusual balance.
Notwithstanding all this, my landscapes retain the predominant features that have defined my work over the past years. The landscape is still dominated by the archaic church cupolas, a constant reminder of our mediterranean submissive nature to our belief that gives us a false sense of moral security, the colours, still mediterranean, the surface still heavily textured and the perennial palm tree, symbol of man’s spirit of perseverance amidst the different landscapes of life.
My first palm tree sprouted somewhere in 2008, replacing the cypress tree which had been present in many landscapes before. Since then, this detail in many of my works has redefined itself as representational of individuals living particular circumstances, within their own personal context. Dead Palm Tree is not about death, it’s about acknowledging that whoever we are and whatever we do, no matter how much we persevere and no matter how infallable we may think we are, we all die. And as I look at this collection and see how my style is evolving, this theme becomes also representative of the end of a phase and the birth of a new one.
My small paintings are very intimate as they invite the viewer to move closer to the work and become part of the experience that I want to share.
